Standard #4: Content Knowledge
As an educator in the music setting, it is imperative that I know my content - that I am a practicing, professional musician and composer myself. Below are videos of my musical performances in various settings across instruments and compositional periods. To see more of my performance and compositional work, check out my YouTube channel and my Main Website.
"Table Talk" for prepared vibraphone - this piece is a percussive duet for vibraphone and "found objects" - small instruments and pieces of trash affixed to the instrument.
"Meditation no. 2" for snare drum - this piece is an exploration of all the timbral qualities of a snare drum beyond what is usually explored.
"Spring Equinox" for piano - I premiered this piece at the International Francophone Festival as a featured artist, in collaboration with the Embassies of France and Belgium.
"Argoru VII" for vibraphone - coming from a Twi word meaning "to play," this piece is a shimmering display of virtuosity for the vibraphone. This was part of my successful audition tape to summer institute festivals such as Miami Beach, Atlantic, Mostly Modern, and Lake George music festivals.
"LOOPS" for piano and violin - I wrote this piece for my friend Dan Qiao, a fantastic violinist studying at the Cincinatti Conservatory of Music. It uses complex rhythmic patterns and progressive harmonies to create an underlying sense of groove.
(below) the program for my senior recital as part of my B.M. at Howard University. A playlist of each piece on the program can be found here.
