Standard #5: Content Application
Standard #5: Content Application
Applying content I've learned and experienced into concrete pedagogical practice is something I am deeply passionate about as an educator. From my time at summer music institute festivals participating in educational workshops and ensemble residencies to the conferences I have attended as an educator, I am deeply committed to deepening not just my familiarity with, but my application of justice-centered practices in the classroom as they apply to my specific content area and the broader world.
As a collegiate member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), I had the privilege of attending the National Conference for Music Educaiton in National Harbor, MD throughout my time in college in the nation's capitol. While there, I collaborated and networked with former teachers of mine in leadership positions to produce an article which was published in the 2023 edition of the Teaching Music section of the National Journal for Music Education.
The article (linked here) focuses on the marginalization of percussionists within educational settings, and strategies a band or orchestra director can use to avoid complicity with a system that often neglects many students' music education.
